A Dudhsagar waterfall
A trip from North Goa takes a full day. Expect about 2 to 2.5 hours by road to the jeep base at Collem (also spelled Kulem), then a forest jeep ride of roughly an hour to the falls, so reaching the water takes about 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Jeep safaris usually run from around October to May and are generally suspended in the monsoon, so check they are operating before you set out.
Where Is Dudhsagar Waterfall?

Dudhsagar is a four-tiered waterfall on the Mandovi river in the Western Ghats, on the Goa–Karnataka border. It lies inside Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, near Mollem in eastern Goa. The falls drop about 310 metres, which places them among the tallest waterfalls in India. The name means "sea of milk", after the white spray.
A railway line crosses the face of the falls on a bridge, which is why Dudhsagar appears in so many photographs. From North Goa, the falls are on the far side of the state. That makes the trip a full day's commitment rather than a quick stop, and it is worth planning around.
Seeing the falls from a train

Trains on the line between Madgaon and Londa pass in front of the falls, and passengers get a brief view from the window. This is a popular way to glimpse Dudhsagar in the monsoon, when jeeps are not running. The view lasts only moments, schedules change, and getting off to walk along the tracks is not allowed.
How the Dudhsagar Jeep Safari Works
The standard way to reach the falls is by a registered jeep from Collem, a village near Mollem. Private cars cannot drive to the falls. The system, run through a local jeep operators' association under Forest Department rules, usually works like this:
- Drive to the jeep counter at Collem and join the queue, or show your advance booking.
- Book seats in a shared jeep, or hire a whole jeep for your group.
- Show original photo ID for every adult. Copies may not be accepted.
- Rent a life jacket at the base. Life jackets are compulsory for everyone going to the falls.
- Pay the forest entry fee, plus a camera fee if one is charged, at the sanctuary gate.
- Ride roughly 45 minutes to an hour on a rough forest track that crosses streams.
- Walk the last stretch, usually 10 to 15 minutes, to the pool at the base of the falls.
- Spend a fixed window at the falls, often about an hour to an hour and a half, before the jeep returns.
Jeeps usually run from morning to early afternoon, and the last departures fill early in peak season. Jeep charges and forest fees are fixed locally and change from season to season, so confirm current rates at the counter or with your tour operator.
Best Time for a Dudhsagar Waterfall Trip
The usual jeep safari season runs from about October to May. The falls are fullest in the monsoon, but the forest track floods, and the Forest Department generally suspends jeep trips from around June until the rains ease. The reopening date is announced each year and has often fallen in October.
| Period | Jeep safari | Waterfall flow | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| June to September | Usually closed | Strongest | No jeep access. Walking along the railway line is not permitted. |
| October to December | Usually open from the reopening date | Strong after the monsoon | The best mix of flow and access. Expect crowds in late December. |
| January to March | Usually open | Moderate | Pleasant weather and dependable trips. |
| April to May | Usually open, subject to conditions | Lower | Hot inland, with a calmer pool at the base. |
If you are visiting in October, confirm that jeeps have restarted before you leave North Goa. Our guide to Goa in October covers what else is open as the season begins.
How Long the Trip Takes From North Goa
Plan 10 to 12 hours door to door. From Calangute, Candolim, Saligao or Anjuna, the usual route runs via Panaji and Ponda towards Mollem and Collem. Leaving early is the single biggest help, because queues at the jeep counter grow through the morning. A sample day looks like this:
| Approximate time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:30 am | Leave North Goa |
| 8:30 to 9 am | Reach Collem, book or collect your jeep, and rent life jackets |
| 9:30 to 10:30 am | Jeep ride and walk to the falls |
| 10:30 am to noon | Time at the falls |
| Noon to 1 pm | Jeep back to Collem |
| 1:30 to 3:30 pm | Lunch and a guided walk at a spice plantation near Ponda |
| 6 to 7 pm | Back in North Goa |
Traffic, queues and the number of stops all change these timings. Treat the plan as a guide, not a schedule. A few choices make the day smoother:
- Go on a weekday. Weekends and public holidays bring the longest queues at Collem.
- Pack breakfast. An early start leaves little time to stop, so eat on the road.
- Hire a whole jeep if you are a group. You leave when you are ready instead of waiting for shared seats to fill.
Combining Dudhsagar With a Spice Plantation

A spice plantation is the most common add-on, because the Ponda area sits on the route between North Goa and Collem. Long-running plantations such as Sahakari Spice Farm and Tropical Spice Plantation near Ponda offer a guided walk through pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla and areca nut, usually followed by a Goan buffet lunch. Many Dudhsagar tour packages include one. Fees and inclusions vary, so check what is covered when you book.
Two temples make good alternatives if spices do not appeal. Shri Mangueshi Temple near Ponda is one of Goa's best-known temples. Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple, a small stone temple from around the 12th or 13th century, sits inside the sanctuary north of Mollem, but it adds a detour and suits an unhurried day.
What to Carry for the Trip
Pack for water, dust and a long day in the car. This list covers the essentials:
- Original photo ID for every adult in the group.
- Cash for jeep seats, forest fees, life jackets and snacks, as card and UPI access can be patchy in the forest.
- Water and light snacks for the jeep ride and the wait at the counter.
- Quick-dry clothes and a full change, plus a small towel.
- Sandals or water shoes with grip for wet rocks at the pool.
- A waterproof pouch for your phone and money.
- Sunscreen, a cap and insect repellent.
- Motion-sickness tablets if you feel unwell on bumpy roads.
- A bag for rubbish. Carry out everything you bring into the sanctuary.
Safety at Dudhsagar

Dudhsagar is generally safe to visit when you follow the rules of the jeep operators and the Forest Department. Most problems come from ignoring them:
- Keep your life jacket on in the water. Enter only where staff allow it; the pool is deep and cold.
- Watch your footing. Rocks around the pool are wet and slippery.
- Stay off the railway line. Walking on the tracks or the bridge is not permitted and is dangerous, and railway authorities have penalised trekkers.
- Do not go when safaris are suspended. Water levels in the monsoon can rise quickly.
- Guard your food. Monkeys near the falls may grab bags and snacks.
- Think about the jeep ride. The track is very bumpy, so check with the operator first if you are pregnant, have back problems or are travelling with very young children.
- Be back on time. Jeeps run on a schedule and will not wait long.
Booking the Trip and Where to Stay
here are two easy ways to plan a Dudhsagar trip. The first is to book a tour package from North Goa, which usually includes pickup, the jeep ride and lunch at a spice plantation. It is a convenient option if you want everything arranged for you.
The second option is to take a taxi or drive yourself to Collem and buy the jeep tickets at the counter. This gives you more flexibility with your timing, but you may have to wait in a queue. It is always better to book your trip through a registered operator.
If you are staying at a Vilmaris villa, the villa manager can also help with planning the trip and arranging transport for an early morning start. Sunridge Vilmaris Villa in Saligao is a good option for families and groups looking for a private pool and chef-on-call service. 3 BHK villas start from around ₹18,000 per night.
For couples, Vilmaris Luxe Hotel in Calangute is another option, with rooms starting from around ₹4,620 per night. Room and villa rates can vary depending on the season.
Dudhsagar is best planned as one of the main outings during a longer Goa trip. You can also check our 3-day Goa itinerary and guide to the best places to visit in Goa to plan the rest of your stay.
