Pune to Goa by road is about 450 km and usually takes 8 to 10 hours of driving. The standard route follows NH48 via Satara and Karad to Kolhapur, then descends through the Amboli ghat to Sawantwadi and the Goa border. The main alternative continues on NH48 to Belagavi and drops into North Goa by the Chorla ghat.

Route 1: Pune to Goa via Kolhapur and the Amboli Ghat

Planning an Epic Pune to Goa Road Trip: Ideas and Tips

The Amboli route is the most common way to drive from Pune to Goa. It is usually the most direct, and it enters Goa at Patradevi in Pernem, the closest border crossing to the North Goa beach belt. You cover the first half on fast highway and the second half on smaller roads.

  • Pune to Kolhapur (about 230 km): NH48 south via Satara and Karad, usually 4 to 4.5 hours.
  • The Nightmare called Pune - Satara - Karad - Kolhapur Highway - Page 6 - Team-BHP
  • Kolhapur to Amboli: state roads via Ajara climb to the Amboli plateau, roughly 2.5 hours.
  • Amboli to the Goa border: the ghat descends to Sawantwadi, where you join NH66 and cross into Goa at Patradevi, about an hour.

The Amboli ghat itself is the slowest part of the day. The road drops off the plateau towards Sawantwadi through a long series of bends, with steep drops beside the road in places and little room to overtake. Plan to reach Amboli by early afternoon so you finish the descent in good light.

Route 2: Pune to Goa via Belagavi and the Chorla Ghat

The Chorla route keeps you on NH48 for longer, past Kolhapur, Kagal, Nipani and Sankeshwar to Belagavi. From Belagavi a state road runs west through the Chorla ghat to Keri in Sattari taluka, then on via Sanquelim, Bicholim and Mapusa. It is the sensible fallback when the Amboli road is closed, crowded or under repair.

Expect roughly 450–480 km to Calangute and 9 to 10 hours of driving. The Chorla ghat is narrow in places. North Goa authorities have also restricted heavy goods vehicles on the Keri–Belagavi road during the day at times, including through the 2026 monsoon, so check the current position before you go.

Road Conditions and Monsoon Tips

The ghat at the end, not the highway, decides how smooth this drive is. From June to September both Amboli and Chorla get very heavy rain, and closures can happen at short notice. Check road status the night before and again at Kolhapur, where the two routes split.

  • Amboli in the monsoon: Amboli is among the wettest places in Maharashtra, with dense fog and waterfalls beside the road. Weekend crowds at the waterfalls can cause long jams from July to September.

  • NH48 work zones: The Pune–Satara–Kolhapur stretch has had long-running widening and flyover work in places. Allow some buffer time.
  • Other ghats: Some drivers use the Phonda ghat from Kolhapur via Radhanagari to Kankavli, then NH66 south; it adds distance but avoids Amboli and Chorla. The Tilari ghat via Chandgad and Dodamarg is known for very steep, tight bends and suits only confident drivers.
  • Daylight and fuel: Cross any ghat in daylight and refuel at Kolhapur or Belagavi before the climb.
  • Live checks: Use Google Maps traffic, local news and the NHAI highway helpline (1033). Keep your FASTag recharged for the NH48 toll plazas.

Where to Stop Between Pune and Goa

Two or three stops are enough on an 8 to 10-hour drive. Stop in larger towns for fuel, food and clean washrooms, and top up before the ghat. These are the most practical halts:

Amboli - All You SHOULD Know Before Going 2026 (with Reviews)

  • Satara: about 2 hours from Pune, a good breakfast stop.
  • Karad: an easy highway town for fuel and tea.
  • Kolhapur: the natural lunch stop, known for Kolhapuri misal, tambda-pandhra rassa and the Mahalaxmi Temple.
  • Amboli: a short tea stop with viewpoints over the ghat; very busy on monsoon weekends.
  • Sawantwadi: known for its painted wooden toys and the Moti Talav lake in the town centre.
  • Belagavi (Chorla route): the last big town before the ghat, known for the milk sweet kunda.

A sample driving day via Amboli

This timeline shows how a typical day can run. Real times depend on traffic, weather and how long you stop.

  1. 5:30 am: leave Pune to clear city traffic before it builds.
  2. 7:30 am: breakfast near Satara.
  3. 10:00–11:00 am: reach Kolhapur; refuel and take an early lunch.
  4. 1:30 pm: reach Amboli and start the descent in daylight.
  5. 3:00 pm: cross into Goa at Patradevi.
  6. 4:00 pm: arrive in Saligao, Calangute or Anjuna, in time for sunset.

Arriving in North Goa

Both routes enter North Goa directly, so you do not need to pass through Panaji. From Patradevi, Mapusa is about 30–40 minutes away, and Calangute, Saligao and Anjuna are roughly 45 minutes to an hour. From Keri on the Chorla route, allow about 1.5 hours to the coast via Sanquelim, Bicholim and Mapusa.

Driving changes once you pass Mapusa. Roads narrow into village lanes with scooters, pedestrians and the odd stray cow, so slow down for the last few kilometres. Goa Police run regular checks for drink-driving, seat belts and helmets, especially at night in the Calangute–Baga belt.

Manohar International Airport at Mopa is also in Pernem taluka, a short detour off NH66. That helps if some of your group are flying in while the rest drive down.

Plan the return drive too. Bringing liquor bought in Goa back into Maharashtra is tightly restricted, and excise teams check vehicles near the border, so check the current rules before you pack any bottles. Leave Goa early in the morning to cross the ghat in daylight.

— Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many hours does it take from Pune to Goa by road?

It usually takes 8 to 10 hours of driving for about 450 km, plus stops. The Amboli route is often a little quicker than the Chorla route. Monsoon weather, weekend traffic and road works can add an hour or more.

Which route is better from Pune to Goa, Amboli or Chorla?

Amboli is usually the more direct choice for North Goa, entering at Patradevi in Pernem. Chorla, via Belagavi, keeps you on NH48 for longer and works well when the Amboli road is closed or crowded. Check both before you leave, especially in the monsoon.

Is Amboli ghat safe to drive in the monsoon?

Amboli ghat is drivable in the monsoon, but it gets very heavy rain and dense fog from June to September. Drive only in daylight, go slowly on the bends and avoid peak weekend afternoons, when waterfall crowds cause jams. If there is a landslide warning, switch to the Chorla route or wait.

Can I plan a Pune to Goa road trip for a long weekend?

Yes, a three-day long weekend works if you leave early on day one and set off home on day three. That gives you about one and a half full days in North Goa. A four-day weekend is more relaxed and leaves time for Calangute, Baga and Anjuna.

When is the best time to drive from Pune to Goa?

October to March offers dry roads and clear ghats. November to February is Goa's peak season, so book your stay early. The monsoon brings green views around Amboli but a higher chance of fog, landslides and delays.

Is a villa or a hotel better for a group driving from Pune?

A villa usually suits groups better, because every Vilmaris villa has dedicated parking, a private pool, a villa manager and a chef on call. Sunridge Vilmaris Villa in Saligao and Casa Palacio in Arpora suit groups of 6 to 20. Couples may prefer Vilmaris Luxe Hotel in Calangute, which has free parking.
