December is Goa's busiest and most expensive month, with dry sunny days, calm seas and the fullest events calendar of the year. It runs from the Feast of St Francis Xavier on 3 December through Christmas to New Year's Eve, so book your stay and transport early. For better value, travel in the first half of the month, before the holiday rush starts around 20 December.

December has some of the most reliable weather in Goa. Rain is rare, humidity drops from November , and evenings feel pleasant rather than sticky. Days are still hot on a midday, so plan beach time for mornings and late afternoons. The sea is usually calm and clear, which makes December one of the best months for swimming and water sports.

Crowds and Prices in Goa in December
December in Goa works like two different months. From 1 to about 18 December, the season is in full swing but crowds are manageable, and rates are high but not at their peak. From about 20 December to New Year's Day, North Goa is at its busiest, with long weekends, office holidays and school breaks all landing at once.
In 2026, Christmas falls on a Friday and New Year's Day on the following Friday, which creates two long weekends in a row. Expect heavy traffic on the Calangute–Baga road and around Anjuna and Vagator in the evenings, and book restaurants for key nights. Many hotels and villas in Goa set minimum stays over Christmas and New Year, so check the rules before you plan a short trip.

Feast of St Francis Xavier (Thursday 3 December)
The Feast of St Francis Xavier is one of Goa's biggest church feasts and is held every year on 3 December at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, where the saint's relics are kept. A nine-day novena leads up to it from late November. On the feast day, masses start before dawn and continue through the morning, and a large fair usually sets up around Old Goa. Old Goa is about 45–60 minutes by road from Calangute, so leave early and dress modestly.
Serendipity Arts Festival (13–20 December 2026)
Serendipity Arts Festival is a multi-disciplinary arts festival held in Panaji each December, covering visual art, music, theatre, dance, craft and food. The 2026 edition is announced for 13–20 December. Events are spread across venues in Panaji, many near the Mandovi riverfront. Past editions have been largely free to attend, with registration needed for some events, so check the official programme before you go.
Goa Liberation Day (Saturday 19 December)
Goa Liberation Day marks the end of Portuguese rule on 19 December 1961. It is a state public holiday, and official ceremonies are held in Panaji. For visitors, the main effects are closed government offices and some extra weekend traffic, because the holiday falls on a Saturday in 2026.
Christmas in Goa (24–25 December)
Christmas is the heart of December in Goa. Homes and churches hang paper star lanterns and build cribs, families prepare kuswar sweets such as bebinca, neureos and kulkuls, and midnight mass is held on the night of 24 December. New Year's Eve (Thursday 31 December)
New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year in North Goa. Beach parties and ticketed events run across Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and Vagator, and fireworks light up the coast at midnight. Roads can stay jammed from early evening, so pick a party close to where you are staying, or celebrate at your villa. Book tables and tickets early, and agree on a driver or taxi for the way back.
Sunburn and December Music Events
Sunburn, the electronic music festival long linked with North Goa, moved its main festival to Mumbai in 2025, and its 2026 edition has been announced for Mumbai on 18–19 December. North Goa still has a busy December music scene. Clubs and beach venues in Anjuna, Vagator and Baga run their own line-ups through the holiday weeks. Every major North Goa beach is fully running in December. Calangute and Baga are the busiest, with water sports, shacks and nightlife close by.
