Goa in May is hot, humid and mostly dry, with daytime highs of about 33°C, warm nights and pre-monsoon showers that usually arrive in the last week or so. It is the last month of the tourist season, because beach shacks and water sports usually close around the end of May. Rates are often the best value of the dry season, which makes May a good month for a private pool villa holiday.
Goa weather in May 2027

May is usually Goa's hottest-feeling month, because humidity peaks and the nights barely cool down. Rain stays rare in the first half of the month, then clouds, showers and thunderstorms start to build ahead of the monsoon. The figures below are approximate long-term averages for the Panaji area.
| Measure | Typical May conditions | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime high | About 33°C | Midday is too hot for sightseeing, so plan outdoor time early and late |
| Night-time low | About 27°C | Nights stay warm and sticky, so air conditioning is essential |
| Humidity | Very high | Expect to sweat even in the shade, and drink water steadily |
| Rainfall | Mostly dry until the last week or so, then pre-monsoon showers | Keep late-May plans flexible |
| Sea temperature | About 29 to 30°C | Warm water, best for early-morning swims |
| Sea conditions | Calm early in the month, rougher towards the end | Swim and do water sports in the first half of May |
The key point is timing within the month. The first two to three weeks of May feel like a hotter April. The last week can feel like the start of the monsoon, with grey skies, wind and heavier surf.
When does the monsoon reach Goa?

The south-west monsoon usually reaches Goa in the first half of June, though the date changes every year and it occasionally arrives in late May. Pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms often start a week or two before the official onset. The India Meteorological Department publishes its onset forecast in May, so check it before you fix late-May dates.
If you want a beach holiday, travel in the first half of May. If you enjoy the first rains and plan to spend most of your time at a pool villa, the last week of May can still be good value. For June to September, read our Goa monsoon season travel guide.

Is May a good time to visit Goa?
May is a good time to visit Goa if value matters more to you than weather and you are happy to slow down in the heat. It works best for families and groups who will spend much of the day around a private pool.
Reasons to go in May
- Rates are usually well below the winter peak.
- International visitor numbers drop, so beaches are quiet on weekday mornings.
- It is peak mango season, and local markets are full of Goan varieties.
- It is your last chance for beach shacks and water sports until the new season begins in the autumn.
Reasons to think again
- Heat and humidity are at their highest, which can be hard on elderly travellers and small children.
- Shacks and water sports close around the end of May, and rough weather can close them sooner.
- Seasonal markets, such as the Wednesday flea market in Anjuna, usually end their season by April.
- Weekends can be busy with Indian families on school holidays.
Last call for beach shacks and water sports

May is the last month of Goa's beach season, so plan beach activities for early in the month. Beach shacks licensed under the state's shack policy usually stop operating around the end of May. Water sports on the beaches are usually suspended from late May until the end of September. The exact dates are set by the state each year, and rough seas can stop activities earlier.
How to plan around the cut-off
- Book parasailing, jet skiing or a dolphin-spotting trip in the first half of May, at Calangute, Baga, Candolim or Sinquerim.
- Go in the morning, when the sea is usually calmest.

- Ask your hotel or villa manager to confirm that operators are still running before you set out.
- Keep a backup plan for late May, such as a pool day, a spa treatment or a morning at the churches of Old Goa.
What stays open after the beach season
Much of Goa keeps going after May. Most established restaurants in Calangute, Candolim and Panaji stay open, as do hotels with pools, the churches of Old Goa, Fort Aguada and the Friday market in Mapusa. What changes is life on the sand, not the rest of the holiday.
Mango season and other May food.

May is peak mango season in Goa, and it is one of the best reasons to visit this month. Goa's most prized variety is the Mankurad, a medium-sized mango with rich yellow pulp and a thin seed. You will also find other Goan varieties such as Hilario, Mussarat and Fernandin, each with its own flavour and season.
- Where to buy: the Friday market in Mapusa and the municipal market in Panaji are the best-known places for local mangoes. Ask the seller which variety you are buying, because Mankurad costs more than most.
- How to eat them: ripe and fresh, as a milkshake, or in the mango desserts and curries that appear on seasonal menus.
- Other seasonal produce: jackfruit, cashew fruit and kokum are also around in early summer. Kokum goes into sol kadi, the cooling pink drink served with Goan meals.
In some years, Goa hosts a mango festival in May, usually in Panaji or Margao. Dates and venues change, so check local listings closer to your trip.
How to beat the heat in May

Treat May as a pool-and-early-start holiday. Get outside at sunrise, retreat indoors or into the water by late morning, and come out again after 4 pm. A sample day at a villa looks like this:
- 6:30 am to 9:30 am: swim at Candolim or Calangute Beach, or walk up to Fort Aguada before the sun gets strong.
- 10 am: late breakfast back at your villa or hotel.
- 11 am to 4 pm: pool, Jacuzzi, a nap and a long lunch, with a massage from the spa on call if you want one.
- 5 pm to 7 pm: sunset at Vagator Beach or Chapora Fort.
- Evening: dinner out in Calangute or Baga, or a barbecue at home using the villa's BBQ setup.
Keep scooter trips short in the middle of the day, carry water in the car, and use shade wherever you can. Most people find May comfortable once they stop trying to sightsee at noon.
Shaded things to do in May
Some of North Goa's best sights work well in the heat, because they are indoors or under trees. Try these when you want a break from the pool:
- Old Goa: the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral are cool inside, but go before 11 am, because the lawns between them have little shade.
- Spice plantations near Ponda: guided walks through shaded spice gardens, often with a Goan lunch. Check timings and what is included when you book.
- Fontainhas in Panaji: walk the old Latin quarter in the late afternoon, when its narrow lanes are in shade.
- A spa afternoon: every Vilmaris villa has a spa on call, so you can book a massage without leaving home.
Hotel and villa rates in May
May is usually the best-value month of Goa's dry season. International demand drops, and many hotels and villas price May well below the winter peak. Weekends can still fill with Indian families on school holidays, so midweek stays usually get the best rates.
Booking direct also helps. At stayvilmaris.com there is no OTA commission, and you can ask about rates for longer stays or larger groups. At Vilmaris, rates vary by season: hotel rooms start from ₹3,150 a night at Hotel Vilmaris Breeze and from ₹4,620 at Vilmaris Luxe Hotel.
Where to stay in Goa in May: why pool villas make sense
In May, a private pool villa makes more sense than at any other time of the dry season. You spend the hottest hours at home, so a private pool, full air conditioning and reliable power backup matter more than a sea view. Every Vilmaris villa has a private pool, air conditioning throughout, a villa manager, housekeeping, a chef on call, a spa on call, a BBQ setup, pickup and drop, and 24×7 power backup.
| Villa | Location | Size and guests | From (per night, whole villa) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunridge Vilmaris Villa | Grand Morrod, Saligao, about 10 minutes from Calangute Beach | 3 BHK for 6, 4 BHK for 8, 5 BHK for 10 | ₹18,000 / ₹35,000 / ₹45,000 |
| Vilmaris Anjuna Woods | Mazal Waddo, Anjuna, about 800 m from Anjuna Beach | 4 BHK for up to 8 | ₹35,000 |
| Vilmaris Courtyard Villa | Anjuna | 5 BHK for up to 10 | ₹50,000 |
| Vilmaris Casa Palacio Villa | Arpora-Baga Road, Arpora, about 5 minutes from Baga | 10 BHK for up to 20 | ₹60,000 |
Rates vary by season, so ask for your exact May dates when you enquire. Sunridge Vilmaris Villa and Vilmaris Courtyard Villa also have a private Jacuzzi, which is welcome on hot evenings. For more choices, see our summer vacation villas in Goa.

If You Prefer Staying in a Hotel
Vilmaris Luxe Hotel in Calangute is a good option if you want to relax and enjoy your Goa trip. The hotel has a semi-covered swimming pool with a sunken bar, where you can spend time without being in the sun all day. All rooms come with air conditioning, a private balcony and Wi-Fi. The in-house restaurant, Two States, also makes it easy to enjoy your meals without stepping out in the heat.
