Is April a good time to visit Goa?

April is a good time to visit Goa if you want lower rates and quieter beaches and you do not mind heat. It suits couples, families who plan their days around a pool, and groups who want a villa at better value than in winter. It is a weaker choice if heat makes you unwell or you want the full winter calendar of parties and events.

April suits you if

  • You want better value than the December and January peak.
  • You prefer quiet mornings on Candolim, Sinquerim, Anjuna and Vagator beaches.
  • You plan to spend the afternoons in a private pool or a hotel pool.
  • You want water sports with shorter queues than on winter weekends.

Think twice if

  • You, or someone travelling with you, struggles in heat and humidity.
  • You want the big winter celebrations, such as Christmas and New Year in Goa.
  • You want every seasonal market and beach venue open; some wind down through April and May.

If you are still choosing between months, our guide to the best time to visit Goa for couples, families and budget travellers compares the whole year.

Easter, Shigmo and crowds in April 2027

In 2027 Easter falls just before April, so the Easter rush lands at the very end of March. Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027. Holy Week services are held at churches across Goa, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral in Old Goa, and the Easter weekend usually brings higher rates and fuller flights.

The first few days of April may still feel busy as holiday travellers head home. After that, April settles into a quieter rhythm, especially midweek.

Shigmo float parades

Shigmo is Goa's spring festival, celebrated after Holi with folk dances, drums and float parades that move from town to town. Holi falls in late March in 2027, so some Shigmo parades may run into early April. Goa Tourism announces the parade schedule each year, so check it if you want to see one.

School holidays and weekends

Indian school summer holidays usually start in late April or May, depending on the state and school board. Expect more families on weekends in the second half of April, particularly at Calangute and Baga. Midweek dates in early and mid April are usually the quietest and best-value days of the month.

Beaches and water sports in April

April is one of the calmest months for the sea in Goa, and beach water sports usually run all month. Mornings are the best time for both swimming and water sports: the sea is flatter, the sand is still cool and the crowds have not arrived.

Which North Goa beach to choose

  • Calangute and Baga: the busiest stretch, with the widest choice of water sports, shacks and restaurants.
  • Candolim and Sinquerim: wide, calmer beaches below Fort Aguada, good for families and early swims.
  • Anjuna and Vagator: red laterite cliffs, rocky coves and sunset views, better in the late afternoon than at midday.
  • Morjim and Ashwem: further north across the Chapora river, quieter and slower-paced.

Water sports in April

Parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat rides and dolphin-spotting boat trips usually operate through April at Calangute, Baga, Candolim and Sinquerim. Book at official counters, or ask your hotel or villa manager to arrange a licensed operator. Agree the price and duration before you start, and always wear the life jacket provided. Our complete guide to water sports in Goa explains each activity.

Water sports on Goa's beaches are usually suspended for the monsoon from late May until the end of September, with the exact dates set by the state each year. April gives you a full month of activity before any cut-off. Swim only in flagged zones where lifeguards are on duty.

How to plan your day around the April heat

The simplest way to enjoy Goa in April is to split each day into three parts: outdoors early, pool and rest through the hottest hours, and out again from late afternoon. This keeps you out of the strongest sun without cutting what you see.

TimeWhat to doWhere in North Goa
6 am to 10 amSwim, walk the beach and visit forts before the sun is highCandolim Beach, Fort Aguada, Calangute Beach
10 am to 1 pmChurch visits, cafés and morning marketsBasilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral in Old Goa; Mapusa market on Fridays
1 pm to 4 pmLong lunch, pool, nap or a spa treatmentYour hotel or villa
4 pm to 7 pmWater sports, beach time and sunsetBaga, Sinquerim, Vagator, Chapora Fort
After 7 pmDinner and nightlifeCalangute, Baga, Candolim, Anjuna

Heat safety tips

  • Drink water through the day, not only when you feel thirsty, and carry oral rehydration salts.
  • Wear loose cotton or linen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Use a high-SPF sunscreen and reapply it after every swim.
  • Avoid riding a scooter between noon and 3 pm, when the sun is strongest.
  • Eat light at lunch and keep heavier meals for the evening.
  • Stop and cool down in the shade if you feel dizzy, sick or get a headache, which are early signs of heat exhaustion.

What to eat and drink in April

April brings the start of Goa's mango season and the cashew season, and both show up in markets and on menus. Local food also leans towards cooling drinks that help in the heat.

  • Mankurad mangoes: Goa's best-known mango starts reaching markets such as Mapusa and Panaji in spring. Early fruit is expensive, and prices usually ease as the season goes on.
  • Urrak: the first, lighter distillation from fermented cashew apple juice, made only during the cashew season. It is often mixed with lime and soda. Drink it in moderation and never drive afterwards.
  • Sol kadi: a pink drink of kokum and coconut milk, served with Goan fish curry and rice. It is cooling and helps after spicy food.
  • Tender coconut water: sold at roadside stalls near most beaches, and the easiest way to rehydrate.

If you would rather not go out in the afternoon heat, eat where you stay. Guests at Vilmaris Luxe Hotel can use Two States, the hotel's in-house multi-cuisine restaurant, and every Vilmaris villa has a chef on call.

Hotel and villa rates in April

Rates in April are usually lower than in the December and January peak, which makes it one of the better-value months of the dry season. Prices still depend on your dates: the Easter weekend at the end of March and weekends later in April usually cost more than midweek stays.

Three ways to get better value in April:

  1. Travel midweek, and avoid the Easter weekend and school-holiday weekends if your dates are flexible.
  2. Book direct with the property. At stayvilmaris.com there is no OTA commission, and you can ask about longer stays.
  3. Match the stay to your group. A whole villa shared by two or three families can work out cheaper per person than several hotel rooms.

At Vilmaris, rates vary by season. As a guide, rooms at Hotel Vilmaris Breeze start from ₹3,150 a night, rooms at Vilmaris Luxe Hotel from ₹4,620, and a 3BHK villa at Sunridge Vilmaris Villa from ₹18,000 a night for up to six guests.

Where to stay in Goa in April

In April, a good pool matters more than being right on the sand. You will use it most between noon and 4 pm, so choose a stay where the pool is shaded, private or both, and where the air conditioning and power backup are reliable.

A private pool villa for families and groups
